Scenarios When Having Renters Insurance Matters

Posted on

If you rent an apartment, house, or storage unit, you may already know about the option of renters insurance. Renters insurance is something that many renters may think is unnecessary or a waste of money. However, there are some key points in your renting years when having that insurance is vital. Here are some of the scenarios where having renters insurance matters and can save money as well as time.

Water Damage

Flooding can happen anytime and anywhere. A storm surge can bring large amounts of rainwater. If the ground is not able to hold the water, you can end up with severe flooding. You can also have flooding occur when a river crests, when snow melts, or when there are busted pipes in the home or in the apartment complex. When any of these issues happens, water damage is usually part of the problem. If your items are damaged in the flood, you can use renters insurance to help cover the replacement and damages. There are limits, but your renters insurance provider can explain these to you and help you find the right option for your possible needs.

Fire Damage

Fires are something that no one wants to think about. Fires can happen within the rental or as a result of natural disasters. You may be thinking you are not near a line of wildfires and your smoke alarms are in perfect working order. These are important, but fire damage can happen when you least expect it. For example, you may be at work when a power line snaps and the live electrical wire causes a fire. If the fire spreads to your home or apartment, your items can be destroyed. Renters insurance generally offers plans to help with damages caused by fires.

Theft

You may not think of theft or property as something renters insurance would cover. Many renters insurance policies do, in fact, cover this type of issue. If your apartment or home is broken into, you can make a claim with your renters insurance. You will need to have specific information about the items that were stolen. You may also need to have a copy of the police report showing the date of the theft and what happened. Some companies will ask for other information including photographs if you have them.

If you think having renters insurance would benefit you, you need to contact your area insurance representative. They can discuss the various policies with you and help you find the right one for your rental situation. They can also help you choose additional insurance options that can make your life as a tenter easier and more secure. If you have questions about how to make a claim on your renters insurance or about upgrading your renters insurance, contact your insurance representative.
